Brandon Marcello of the Northwest Arkansas Times recently wrote about former Michigan Wolverine quarterback Ryan Mallett. Here's a portion of the story:
Ryan Mallett is labeled by many as the future of the Razorbacks program at quarterback. His tall stature, rocket arm and success on the high school level can easily bring that thought to the mind of Arkansas fans.
But Mallett won't be prepping for a run at the starting job under center this season. In fact, he'll be lucky to get some work in with an offensive unit at practice without the word "scout"
in front of it. Redshirting after transferring from Michigan in January, Mallett took a few snaps in Arkansas' first fall practice Monday and participated in pass skeleton drills near the end of the day as 100-degree temperature began to cool to the paltry, mid-90 s.
More of the same can be expected as the Hogs roll forward toward the start of two-a-day practices Saturday.
"We'll try to get him as many reps as we can without hurting somebody else's preparation,"
UA head coach Bobby Petrino said.
Mallett is forced to sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules. Interrupting his development even more, the Texarkana High School native injured the thumb on his throwing hand during spring drills on April 11 while working with the second team offense. Mallett has since fully recovered and was again throwing high velocity passes during several passing situations Monday.
