Mallet's Homecoming Dance
This much we know for sure, Ryan Mallett is back home in Texarkana. He completed his first trimester at Michigan and returned home, but which move he makes next on the dance floor has many in Texarkana wondering.
I feel comfortable in stating that Ryan Mallett was not enjoying his time in Ann Arbor. Anyone who at age 18 has left home to be with a group of strangers can certainly relate. Thousands of college students return home after one semester and reconsider the decision they made. Of course they are not the nation’s top quarterback prospect. Anyone who follows sports in the Texarkana area knows that Ryan Mallett is also the most decorated high school player here since Billy Sims. Many of us are curious where he will end up playing his college football.
The Hog faithful are sure that Ryan Mallett is headed to Arkansas. Much has changed in Hogland since Coach Nutt cast his lot with Mitch Mustain and let Ryan Mallett get away. Is Ryan Mallett ready to forget that Nutt and Hog fans ignored him for the native son Mustain. Eight years Ryan Mallett attended football camp in Fayetteville, only to see Mustain become the people’s choice. Mustain has now annouced that he is headed to Southern California to seek his fame and fortune. Ryan Mallett could transfer, sit out for a year, and be the savior for Coach Nutt and the Hogs in post Darren McFadden era.
Of course the mighty Oklahoma Sooner program has a ton of great players and no QB of the future to captain Bob Stoops’ powerful warship. It would seem to be a good fit for Ryan Mallett with no previous baggage to carry around in Norman. The before-mentioned Billy Sims seemed to do ok by winning the Heisman Trophy in his time there.
One can only wonder if Mack Brown has second-guessed himself for pulling his offer to Ryan Mallett when he thought Florida’s John Brantley was headed to Austin. Colt McCoy seems entrenched as the starter at Texas for the next three years, and the Horns seem committed to having a running signal caller.
Finally, like many young folks Ryan Mallett may return to Ann Arbor and try to make it work. At this time that does not seem likely, but coaches, parents, and friends may still be in there pitching the Big Blue to a young man with lots weighing on his mind.
Today on our radio show, the vast majority of callers wished to speculate on Ryan Mallett’s next move. The best thing about our callers today was the almost universal hope that the young man would make the choice that would bring him happiness. I can only hope that maybe Ryan was listening, and realizes that most of us are still rooting for him, whatever school he chooses to be his new dance partner.
