PrepStar 100: Ryan Mallett, Joe McKnight, Ryan Miller, and Josh Ogles
This is the fifth installment of PrepStar’s sneak preview of players who are likely to be PrepStar 100 (top 100 prospects in the nation), when PrepStar releases its rankings in late August.
This week PrepStar will profile four outstanding athletes in QB Ryan Mallett, ATH Joe McKnight, OL Ryan Miller, and OL Josh Oglesby. Each athlete is dynamic in their own
way, and all four should be among the nation’s most coveted recruits.
Name: Ryan Mallett
Position: Pro-style quarterback
High School: Texarkana (TX) Texas
Height: 6-7
Weight: 235
Commitment: Michigan
PrepStar Says: Michigan is looking for the quarterback of the future to replace Chad Henne, and may have found him in Ryan Mallett. Ryan Mallett is built like a defensive end at 6-7 and 235-pounds. He has a big, strong arm. As a sophomore, Ryan Mallett completed 151-of-316 passes for 2,307 yards with 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also had seven rushing touchdowns. As a junior last season, he completed 133-of-221 passes for 2,219 yards with 21 touchdowns and just six interceptions. He also added six rushing touchdowns. He may not be as mobile as some of the nation’s other elite quarterbacks, but he has a rifle for an arm, which doesn’t come around often. He throws with such velocity that people are already talking about him being a future NFL quarterback.
Name: Joe McKnight
Position: Athlete
High School: River Ridge (LA) John Curtis
Height: 5-11
Weight: 180
Looking at: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Southern Cal, and Tennessee
PrepStar Says: Joe McKnight is hands down the number one overall player in Louisiana this year. The state of Louisiana is loaded with talent, but Joe McKnight is the hot commodity. As a junior, he ran the ball 36 times for 500 yards with nine scores, had 20 receptions for 500 yards with five scores, averaged 38.7 yards per kickoff return, averaged 29.3 yards per punt return, and made five interceptions on defense. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina last year, Joe McKnight actually played in two games for Shreveport (LA) Evangel Christian, making him the only player in Louisiana last season to play for two state championship teams. Joe McKnight could play running back, slot receiver, or cornerback at the next level. He is so electrifying that most schools recruiting him want to get the ball in his hands and may want him to play on offense.
Name: Ryan Miller
Position: Offensive Tackle
High School: Littleton (CO) Columbine
Height: 6-6
Weight: 280
Looking at: Colorado, Miami, Notre Dame, Southern Cal, Florida State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.
PrepStar Says: Miller has great feet and his frame is one of the best to work with in the nation. Miller is muscular, but also has the ability to add more weight without compromising his speed and agility. Miller is probably hands down the top overall prospect in Colorado in the Class of 2007. Many experts compare him to last year’s premiere offensive lineman, Sam Young, but Ryan Miller may end up being better than Sam Young. He already has the body to play in college. Colorado, Miami, Notre Dame, Southern Cal, Florida State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Tennessee are among the teams trying to land one of the nation’s top offensive linemen.
Name: Josh Oglesby
Position: Offensive Tackle
High School: Milwaukee (WI) St. Francis
Height: 6-7
Weight: 315
Commitment: Wisconsin
PrepStar Says: Josh Oglesby is another one of the nation’s top offensive line prospects in the country. Oglesby already has a NFL body, standing in at 6-7 and 315-pounds. Oglesby manhandles opposing defensive lineman with his size and strength. He’s not afraid to get in anybody’s face and plant them into the ground. Oglesby committed to Wisconsin on April 28th. He picked Wisconsin over schools such as Florida State, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Southern Cal.
