U-M HOT TOPICS: Chad Henne, running game, Ryan Mallett
Despite going down with injuries twice in the first half, the fourth-year starter at quarterback came up with big throws when he needed to. There was an obvious difference in the offense when he was absent. His accuracy (11-for-15, 2 TDs) and poise in the first half staked his teammates to a lead for the second half.
The running game
Thanks to a solid performance by Carlos Brown, the Wolverines escaped Illinois with a victory despite not having Mike Hart in the backfield. Brown set career highs in almost every category, breaking loose for numerous big runs. Backup Brandon Minor, who was carted off the field last week, also picked up some of the slack in Hart's absence.
Ryan Mallett
Not once did he look comfortable Saturday night. The freshman QB fumbled two snaps, and once had to pitch the ball to Brown while falling down on a play that was supposed to be a handoff. An interception at the Illini 4-yard line was enough for Carr to replace Ryan Mallett with Henne, despite the starter's injuries.
